Do you want to think like a Rhodes Scholar?

Intellectual excellence is obviously required, but not in isolation from other qualities. Rhodes scholars are more than bookworms but combine their intellectual talents with concern for others. Intellectual superiority is a necessary but not a sufficient condition for to think and use context thinking. You should exude excellence in qualities of mind and person which, in combination, makes for effective service to the world.

Now, Context thinking can be used to actively and skillfully apply information gathered from observation, experience, and tradition to guide a belief and action. Context Thinking allows you to broaden your outlook socially by rapidly encompassing a 360 degree look at the meaning of an event in relations to other factors such as values and culture.

These beliefs or actions can lead you to an exceptionally bright academic record. This can be in literary and scholastic attainments, success in healthy outdoor sports, unselfishness and fellowship, and display of moral force of character.

Thus developing your mind to think like a Rhodes Scholar is a natural byproduct of taking classes, even courses that require critical thinking for success, and is key to successful thinking in your life. HOW TO PROFIT FROM CRITICAL THINKING SKILLS DEVELOPMENT WITH Context Thinking

Posted by sprint4m on April 26, 2008

Are You Serious About Changing Your Life Starting Today?

I know you’re thinking… Critical thinking is not a natural byproduct of taking college courses, even courses whose subject matter necessitate critical thinking for success, and is an essential ingredient to be successful in life. It is generally assessing the credibility of evidence, meaning that you do things like decide which side of an argument is more believable (e.g. It is the art of taking charge of your own mind.)

Now, let this all sink in for a moment… Critical thinking problem solving is a complex activity and we should not expect that one method of instruction will prove sufficient for developing each of its component parts, and is reasonable, reflective thinking that is focused on what to think or do. It is sometimes called directed thinking because it focuses on a desired outcome. Critical thinking is defined in the learning outcomes handout distributed to faculty members at Northwestern Michigan College as “The ability for the student to use independent thinking and incorporate concepts learned to problem solve a realistic situation.”.

Critical thinking is the intellectually disciplined process of actively and skillfully conceptualizing, applying, analyzing, synthesizing, and/or evaluating information gathered from, or generated by, observation, experience, reflection, reasoning, or communication, as a guide to belief and action, and is also critical inquiry, so such critical thinkers investigate problems, ask questions, pose new answers that challenge the status quo, discover new information that can be used for good or ill, question authorities and traditional beliefs, challenge received dogmas and doctrines, and often end up possessing power in society greater than their numbers.

It is a challenge to me because I always expect to have a definite answer. It is important because it underlies basic elements of communications and plays an important part in society because schools, courts, businesses and governments are a result of critical thinking, and demands the individual to think for them self, to understand the processes of how something came about, to apply learned knowledge and concepts to his/her very own personal way of perceiving things, to problem solve, and to supports one’s argument with logical supportive evidence.
